Bitshares is a decentralized blockchain based financial services platform. One of the first financial service Bitshares offered is a decentralized exchange where you can exchange cryptocurrencies. Bitshares 2.0 is also expanding to include other banking and financial services on the platform. Currently it offers recurring and scheduled payments also on its platform.
In March of 2016 BitShares was included as part of Microsoft Azure Blockchain platform as a service pack.
Bitshares works on Delegated proof of stakes an algorithm which is a variant of Proof of Stakes and was invented by Daniel Larimer founder of Bitshares.
Bitshare developers claim the platform can easily scale to 100k transactions per second though we do not have any real practical proof for that. Bitshares has been known to process a maximum of 3300 transactions per second though it needs to be independently validated.
Bitshare started off as a project of Daniel Larimer along with Charles Hoskinson one of the co-founders of ethereum and Stan Larimer. In its earlier Avatar Bitshares was called A peer to peer polymorphic Digital Asset exchange. Original exchange was called Protoshares which subsequently became core of Bitshare as we see today in 2014.
